DIN 7080 borosilicate glass: scope and limits
What DIN 7080 describes, why 280 °C is a characteristic of the element and not of the assembly, and what to verify at replacement.
Short answer
DIN 7080 describes circular thermally toughened borosilicate glasses for pressure duty. The glass temperature is not the assembly temperature: gaskets and mounting can limit stricter.
Values from the standard are reference values: the applicability of a specific assembly is confirmed by the fitting manufacturer.
What the standard says
The current edition DIN 7080:2025-05 describes glass elements up to 280 °C within the applicable scope. The value refers to the glass element as such.
Why 280 °C cannot be transferred to the fitting
The assembly includes gaskets, body and tightening. PTFE, EPDM, FKM and graphite have different temperature ceilings; the permissible regime of the fitting is determined by the manufacturer.
- check the temperature for every material of the pack;
- consider short-time modes: CIP, SIP, steaming;
- consider thermal shock: a rapid change is more dangerous than the absolute temperature.
Disc replacement
At replacement use discs with confirmed DIN 7080 conformity and matching dimensions; arbitrary “heat-resistant glass” under pressure is not allowed.
